Thoughts from Widow Coach Jody LaVoie, ACC

May is Better Sleep Month
We all know the importance of sleep, but sleep is overlooked or is naturally disrupted amidst life’s challenges. I know I experienced this after Steve died. Nighttime seemed to be when my mind gremlins came out. It was hard to wind down for bed, thoughts were constantly swirling as I stared at the ceiling wide awake, and I was downright sad and alone.
However, in time, I realized that sleep was a cornerstone for my self-care and ability to navigate each day and do my best to approach it from a place of strength, resilience and ability to just take one more step forward each day. I wrote about all of the steps that I took to improve my sleep in the earlier days of my widowhood in a previous Widow Wisdom. Check it out here.
Here are a few gentle reminders as we honor Better Sleep Month:
😴💤😴
Create a Sanctuary of Serenity: Transform your bedroom into a haven of tranquility, free from reminders of grief or stress. Soft lighting, soothing scents and comfortable bedding can foster a sense of peace conducive to restful sleep. For many widows, redecorating your bedroom may help to begin to create a fresh “new” space.
Establish Rituals of Relaxation: Develop bedtime rituals that signal to your body and mind that it’s time to unwind. Whether it’s sipping herbal tea, practicing gentle yoga or indulging in a chapter of a favorite book, find activities that soothe your spirit and prepare you for sleep.
Prioritize Self-Compassion: Be gentle with yourself on this journey. Understand that fluctuations in sleep patterns are normal, especially amidst the ebb and flow of grief. Offer yourself kindness and understanding as you navigate the complexities of loss and healing.
Seek Support When Needed: Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if sleep disturbances persist or become overwhelming. Whether it’s through counseling, support groups, your medical doctor or connecting with trusted loved ones, seeking assistance can provide valuable resources and solace.
Celebrate Small Victories: Celebrate each night of restorative sleep as a triumph, acknowledging the strength within you. Embrace the moments of peace and rejuvenation as you continue to navigate the journey of widowhood with grace and resilience.

As we commemorate Better Sleep Month, may you find solace in the embrace of restorative sleep and the promise of brighter days ahead. Remember, amidst the darkness of the night, there is always the dawn of a new day, filled with hope, healing and possibility.
