Family Values

Have you ever taken a moment to write down what truly matters for your family—Your Values? My late husband Steve and I never officially did, but it was a real turning point for us when I realized that we shared the same core values. Steve wasn’t accustomed to these discussions growing up, so it struck a chord with him.

After Steve passed away and my girls and I found ourselves in the midst of grief, I noticed some behaviors creeping in that weren’t doing us any favors. They weren’t aligned with where we wanted to go. So, I sat down and drafted what I now call our “LaVoie Family Values”. These became my anchor during the stormy seas of loss.

I made a commitment to hold onto those values dearly and let them guide us forward. Together, we discussed behaviors that didn’t fit with our values and pledged to make changes. Actually, I put my foot down and said they must change. It wasn’t easy, but gradually, we started to see a glimmer of progress.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to take some time to write down your family values and share them with your loved ones. For me, it was this commitment to our values that helped us navigate through the toughest of times.
